Benson High School Foundation News - September 2025
SPECIAL MEMORIES
Janice ’58 and Larry ’55 Stoney recently visited the Memory Garden and toured the new Health Center with Principal Melinda Bailey. While we all enjoyed remembering the wonderful years we had at BHS, they were blown away by the Principal after they heard all about Benson, the hardships many of the Benson students have endured on their travels to get here; the amazing feats these students accomplish at Benson; and the 22 different languages many of the students speak, the 33 different countries they represent, and the students’ goals and aspirations they have after receiving their education at Benson High School. What we take for granted is a dream come true for many of the Benson students. An investment in the school through the Benson High School Foundation helps these dedicated young people enjoy the extras that are just a part of the typical American teen’s life—a movie, a baseball game, a trip to a pizza restaurant, a meal with teammates before the football game or a tennis racquet to learn the game. Benson Is the Best!
CLASS REUNIONS
Recently we attended the 50th Reunion of the Class 1975 and spoke about the projects of the Foundation and the hoped for new fields for the baseball and softball teams. First, what a fun class 1975 is! Secondly, we found friends there! Thirdly, we loved the opportunity to share what our alumni are helping the Foundation accomplish: the health center, the tennis courts, the memory garden, the experiences students enjoy, the gear, the team meals, the teacher stipends, the teacher scholarships.
THE BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL FIELDS
As we write, we are in the midst of a ‘coffeethon’ on Facebook (Omaha Benson Foundation) as we raise money for the ball fields. We need 6.5 million We have 2.6 million. If your place of employment does charitable giving, please ask about support for the ball fields. If you do charitable giving, please ask yourself about donating to the baseball fields. We can do this—but it is not easy!!! We have naming rights for each field and the complex itself. The ballfields will be a wonderful addition to beautiful Gallagher Park just across the street from Benson.
ONE FINAL GOOD NOTE:
Jason Swenson is beginning his final year at UNO; he will be a teacher at Benson so very soon. Hats off to this guy who goes to school full time, works as a security guard full at Benson and is an assistant football coach, helping our new fantastic football coach, Shaka Taylor. Jayden is a recipient of the BHSF Scholarship Award.
