Health Center
The Benson Health Center will open its doors in August 2024, providing comprehensive healthcare services to students, faculty, families, and the wider community.
This 10,000 square foot facility will be a collaborative space shared by The Charles Drew Health Center, Methodist Health, Project Harmony, and UNMC. The center will provide dental care, mental health support, family therapy, and general health services, as well as student and teacher training.
Built It and They Came
In 2023, the Foundation transformed three cracked, concrete tennis courts into four state-of-the-art, lighted courts with a professional US Open surface. Under the leadership of Coach Hannah de Freese, a full varsity and junior varsity team was formed, accompanied by enthusiastic student spectators—a first in many years.
The team achieved remarkable success, winning an invitational and a metro match. Despite most of the girls having never held a racquet before joining Benson and signing up for tennis, they quickly developed a love for the game and are on the path to becoming lifelong players.
With 57% of Benson’s students being immigrants, the enthusiasm for tennis is palpable. The dedicated varsity team members include Cho Cho Than, Ba Blut Moo, Eh Ler Paw, November Paw, Hser Nay Tha Kpaw, and Eh Yaw Paw. The junior varsity girls were coached by Devin Post.
